SNOWSHOES IN LEROSA
Walking with the snowshoes in Lerosa along an ancient road
Walking with the snowshoes in Lerosa: one of the most panoramic plateaus of the Natural Park of the Dolomiti d’Ampezzo, between history, centuries-old stone-pines and wild animals. With the ciaspe we arrive at the foot of the Croda Rossa, in an uncontaminated and wild place, especially in winter.
The stone pine on the plateau of Lerosa are centuries-old guardians of the beauty and history of this place. An important high altitude pasture in the summer, the Lerosa basin offers in winter a majestic and wild spectacle, where the white is interrupted only by isolated centuries-old stone pines (Pinus cembra), by the curved limestone rock jumps and by the majestic Croda Rossa (the translation is: Red Mountain).
It is always rewarding to walk at the foot of the Croda Rossa d’Ampezzo and the Lerosa plateau: the intense red color of the rock, its verticality and its proximity make it seem you can touch it.
Going up the Great War military road, we go along the Val di Gotres in its length, gradually passing by a mixed forest of spurces (Picea abies) and Scots pines (Pinus sylvestris) until we reach the Lerosa plateau, where the eye spans 360 °.
Here a crucifix still remains in memory of a small Austrian cemetery, which during the First World War commemorate about 95 victims, not far from it we can still see traces of the conflict and remains of the barracks.
The descent towards Ra Stua is just as beautiful and relaxing, especially in view of a good and warm stop at the cozy mountain cottage!
The excursion is demanding, not because of the difference in level, but because of the length of the route.
