Cianderou: a terrace at the foot of the Tofane

This spectacular hike let us look at Cortina d’Ampezzo from above, immersed in a landscape made of only rock, standing at the foot of the immense walls of the Tofana di Mezzo and the Tofana di Dentro.

The Tonde de Cianderou are a high-altitude terrace at the foot of the Tofane. Rocks rounded by glaciers, are now panoramic, wild, silent witnesses of the events of the World War One.

Crossing the Tonde de Cianderou and Ra zestes, as often happens in the Dolomites, the beauty of the landscape strides with the vicissitudes of World War I, during which many men spent years perched among these mountains. When you find the traces of these events walking to over 2000 m, you can only look to the past with respectful silence and recognize the value of the deeds that have been accomplished in these places. And every time, blinded by the beauty of the panoramas, one cannot but think of those young people who saw the same beauties a hundred years ago, with the hope that they too could enjoy at least a little.

The mountain of Cianderou is rugged, alternating banks of rock with grassy strips where it is comfortable to lie down, with an extraordinarily wide panorama on the valley of Cortina D’Ampezzo: A beautiful terrace located at the foot of the Tofane. This is one of those places that make Cortina d’ampezzo so special: easy to reach (with about an hour’s walk going up with a cable car), but at the same time wild and unspoiled.

Before starting to go down and leave the Tonde de Cianderou we will pass near a cave particularly loved by the inhabitants of Cortina: probably built during the war, high and regular vault, with the bottom always filled by a mirror of clear and transparent water. On the hottest days you will want to dive in it!

At the foot of this mountain runs another of our proposals, that is the Posporcora saddle. You can do it in MTB, but it is beautiful to do even on foot: an itinerary for everyone.
