Monte Piana during winter time. Between history and nature, 360 ° of panorama.

Monte Piana during winter time: a snowshoe ring on top of Monte Piana with a 360° view that spans the Tre Cime of Lavaredo, the Sorapis and the peaks of Braies. Now there are hikers, croaks and chamoix, however during the Great War there was fierce fighting and today an open-air museum allows us to understand the living conditions at those altitudes. After the snowshoeing we can make a quick descent with sleds.

From Misurina to rifugio Bosi – Monte Piana  the snow is groomed and it is possible to climb with snowmobiles, on weekends the hut is open and allows us to refresh ourself, sunbath and enjoy some warm drinks. At the Bosi Hut there’s also a Museum of the Great War, a covered extension of the large open-air museum that spans the entire summit.

Monte Piana, nomen-omen, is like a table: almost flat and surrounded by steep slopes. Beyond the valleys that surround it, there are some of the most famous peaks of the Dolomites: the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, the Cadini di Misurina with their incredible tours, the immense wall of the Marmarole and Sorapìs, the Cristallo and the Croda Rossa. Looking north you can see the peaks that border Italy and Austria.

The plateau was bitterly contested during the Great War: this is witnessed by the kilometers of barbed wire, the numerous commemorative memorial stones and above all the ruins of shacks, trenches and tunnels that are still along the way today. Of course summer is the best season to visit the open-air museum, while particularly snowy winters cover almost everything and allow you to appreciate unspoiled nature.

Note: Historical-cinephile: the zigzag road was used in 1957 to shoot scenes from the Hollywood kollossal “Farewell to Arms”. LINK (1:30 to 3:50) and in 1993 the small rock wall overlooking the two narrowest turns was the beginning of the solo climbing that Silvester Stallone faced in “Cliffhanger”
