LAKE FOSES
Lake Foses: water and Karst
Is it possible to have the presence of lakes in karst areas? At school we learned that the answer is NO, but you should never put limits to nature! On the Foses plateau we’ll walk on limestone floors along the shores of Lake Foses with crystal clear water.
Interesting from the geological point of view, satisfying for the unspoilt and well preserved nature. This excursion is located in the most northerly part of the Natural Park of the Ampezzo Dolomites.
In the Foses plateau we can walk on limestone floors and furrowed fields, along the shores of Lake Foses and visit a sinkhole; this geological particularity is reflected in the blooms and the management of the land, which has always been elected by the Ampezzo people as a privileged place where to graze flocks of sheep.
We will pass at the foot of the Piccola Croda Rossa, a wild top, but reachable without alpine difficulties. Discover the itinerary we propose, because it is a really interesting excursion and that only few know because it is not marked on the maps.
We can relax on thousands of stone chairs, or in a centennial hut just above Lake Foses and under the Croda del Beco, in the middle of a lunar and out of time landscape: at the Biella mountain Hut, where you can have lunch and drink. Here not only the view, but also the sweets are special.
Along the paths you can see the alpine chough playing with winds and breezes, ibexes stop to chew and feel the cheerful whistles of the marmots.
