In the air you breathe calm, love for the territory, sweat and lots of passion. The Agordino is a territory with a diverse and complex geological history, some of the oldest rocks in Italy emerge here. A territory where ancient villages and mountain pastures are still alive and maintained with love.

The Marmolada, queen of the Dolomites, watches us leaving for this ring itinerary that connects Pettorina Valley to the Biois Valley, circumnavigating the Auta peak.

Great protagonists of this itinerary te rocks and the particular spatial-temporal relations that have defined their evolution. In a few hours of walking we will meet rocks with a very different appearance and constitution: light and compact limestone, dark and porous rocks of volcanic origin, red sandstones. Not by chance, not far from here there are two volcanic apparatus that about 230 million years ago helped to shape in a definitive way the evolutionary history of this part of the Dolomites.

There is a symbolic place of this geological variety, where the clear limestone rocks touch the darker volcanic ones. This is an alpine lake with a singular name, “Lago dei Negher”, where the two sides touch each other with their contrasting colours, evident along the shore and by the very special reflections on the bottom of the lake.

We will sleep for the night in a small but cozy hut at the foot of the Auta peak, where we can cook something on fire and enjoy a beautiful sunset with the tops of the Agner and the Civetta that are colored red in front of us.

The following day, once we pass over the Auta peak, we expect a landscape still different and quite interesting. Here the red of the Forca Rossa (“Red Saddle”) rocks dominates and if the legs allow it, we can make a short detour to go to patrol the saddle.

The characteristics of this trek are: tranquillity, relaxation, various panoramas and wide views of the surrounding valleys.

Itinerary Details

Day 1

6 KILOMETRES

+900 m GAIN ELEVATION

-500 m LOSS ELEVATION

Day 2

11 KILOMETRES

600 m GAIN ELEVATION

1000 m LOSS ELEVATION

WHEN – Summer, Autumn.
